Maryland Delegate Announces Run for Congress

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Del. Kumar Barve is the first Maryland lawmaker to announce he will run for Rep. Chris Van Hollen's congressional seat.

Barve, a Montgomery County Democrat, made the announcement Monday in an email to supporters.

In his 25 years in the Maryland House of Delegates, Barve says he's worked to improve the economy. He cited work to foster economic growth through investments in biotechnology and information technology as an example.

Barve is now chairman of the House Environment and Transportation Committee in Annapolis.

He is an accountant and the chief financial officer of a local environmental and hazardous waste remediation company.

Van Hollen, a Democrat, announced last week that plans to run for Sen. Barbara Mikulski's seat. She announced she won't seek re-election in 2016.
