OCEAN PINES, Md. -- A peaceful day in Worcester County took a sinister turn on Friday the 13th when a neighborhood bank was robbed at gunpoint.

Maryland state police say a masked man robbed an Ocean Pines BB&T at around 1:30pm.

Police said the older white man wearing a blue ski mask walked in demanding money from the tellers.

Investigators said the man also took a teller's purse with her car keys and drove off with a bag full of money.

"This never happens over here in the pines. Never," said LaToya Dennis who works at the Shorestop gas station store next to the bank.

Dennis was working at the store when it happened.

"Next thing you knew all the cops come rolling in here like around 1pm, 1:30pm and then all of a sudden we had to shut down our store," Dennis said recalling the nerve-wracking moments.

State police said Showell elementary school, about three miles from BB&T, was put on a code red lockdown. The lockdown was lifted soon after the robbery and school was dismissed at regular time.

Ocean Pines residents said they are shocked to know a bank robbery happened in their quiet neighborhood.

"This blows me away," said Ron Dameron.

"I was just talking to a friend today and I said the most crime you might have here is to have something taken from your car. But not a bank robbery. It's like I'm on the western shore now," Dameron said.

Jeff V. Hare was arrested in connection to the robbery. For details on the arrest, click here
