ELKTON, Md. (AP)- Maryland Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford is attending a summit for the Maryland Heroin and Opioid Emergency Task Force.

Rutherford is expected to join the task force in Elkton on Tuesday. He is leading the effort against heroin use in Maryland.

Last month Gov. Larry Hogan declared the drug's use an emergency and laid out a plan to help address the rising rate of fatal overdoses.

Included in the response is the creation of a task force and council, and a $500,000 federal grant to expand re-entry programs for ex-prisoners. He also mentioned that Maryland had received 5,000 doses of a heroin overdose antidote.
