DOVER, Del.- Police say a 19-year-old Maryland woman jogging in downtown Dover died after being run over by a car late Monday afternoon.

Dover police said that shortly before 5 p.m. Brittany Paige, of Dundalk, Md., had been seen jogging on the west side (southbound) of North State Street. Police said traffic was stopped facing southbound at the Walker Road intersection, when Paige walked eastbound between stopped vehicles.

Investigators said numerous witnesses observed Paige looking at her cellphone with ear buds in her ears as she walked through the stopped traffic, then began to jog across the northbound lanes without looking for oncoming traffic. That is when, according to police, Paige was struck by a Mazda sedan that had just turned left from Walker Road onto North State Street.

Paige was rushed to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where police said she was later pronounced dead due to blunt force trauma.

Paige was a first year student at Wesley College in Dover where she majored in elementary education and special education (K-12), according to a Wesley spokesperson. The college on Tuesday afternoon held a debrief and grief support meeting in memory of Paige.
