PITTSVILLE, Md.- Authorities say a St. Patrick's Day sobriety checkpoint in Wicomico County resulted in the arrests of three suspected drunk drivers.

Maryland State Police from the Salisbury Barrack, along with deputies from the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, conducted the checkpoint at Ocean Gateway (Route 50) and Sixty Foot Road in Pittsville. Seventy-five vehicles passed through during the operation, according to police.

Tuesday's three arrests stemmed from operation "Checkpoint Strikeforce," which is a multi-state, zero-tolerance initiative designed to get impaired drivers off the road using checkpoints and patrols.

Progress on Bowers Beach Drainage Project at Mercy of the Tides

Wrapping up the major replacement of a drainage system beneath an oft-flooded in Bowers Beach has proved to be a slower process than some town officials and neighbors have hoped for.

A new drainage pipe has recently replaced a smaller and older one beneath Hubbard Avenue, a frequent spot for flooding after heavy rain. The system is intended to help flood waters disperse more quickly into the Murderkill River.
