Community Mourns The Loss of 17-year-old Erica Colbourne

Posted:
LAUREL, Del.- A Sussex County community mourns the loss of one of its students.

17-year-old Erica Colbourne was killed in a car accident over the weekend. Flowers and hand-written messages crowd the scene where Colbourne lost her life.

"Losing your best friend is different than losing a family member. It's like a whole completely different type of pain," said Riley Todd of Laurel. "We were just so close."

Friends and family gathered as they remember a life they say was taken too soon.

"She was a great person. She was always happy," said Julia White of Laurel. "She always had a smile on everyone's face and she always put everyone's happiness before hers"

"She was an amazing person," added Lillie Hitchens of Laurel. "She was the type of person to make you happy even when you're sad."

The first day back at Laurel High School from what was a tragic weekend for this community wasn't easy.

"It was hard because I had a lot of classes with her," said Hitchens. "Not seeing her next to me was hard."

Some took the news as a wake up call.

"Don't drink and drive," said Todd. "It ain't worth it. Not at all."

Now friends and family are left picking up the pieces. Saddened by their loss, they look to celebrate the life of their daughter, their classmate and their friend.

Family and friends are also looking to raise money to help with funeral costs. If you would like more information or would like to donate, you can do so by going to their website:
