2 Plead Guilty to Embezzling from Lynchburg Credit Unions

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - Two women have pleaded guilty to embezzling from credit unions in Lynchburg.

Federal prosecutors say 60-year-old Teresa Wieringo Humphries of Madison Heights and 61-year-old Claudia Rawes of Forest entered pleas in separate cases Tuesday.

Humphries admitted stealing more than $1 million from the defunct Lynrocten Credit Union, where she was head teller. The credit union's former manager, Linda Sue Newcomb of Madison Heights, previously pleaded guilty to embezzlement, bank fraud and aggravated identity theft.

Prosecutors say the overall loss was more than $10 million and contributed to the credit union's 2013 collapse.

Rawes managed the Lynchburg General Hospital Branch of the Centra Health Credit Union. She was charged after investigators discovered a $1 million shortfall.
