Del. Schools to Prep Students for Emergencies

Posted:
DOVER, Del.- Delaware's Comprehensive School Safety Plan will be providing materials to school counselors to better prepare elementary students for emergency situations.

Director Wendy Hudson and Deputy Director Joey Melvin will be attending this year's Delaware School Counselor's Conference at Delaware State University on March 27. Delaware elementary school counselors will be presented with copies of “I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared," written by Julia Cook. The children's book was written to help teach young students about the best practices concerning intruders.

CSSP recognizes that because students are accustomed to step-by-step ways schools typically function, it is important to show them that there is no singular response to a dynamic event such as an intruder in a school.

In addition to the book, elementary counselors will also be receiving coordinating activity books designed to help the schools deliver an effective message.
