Mining Equipment Firm Expanding Virginia Operations

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Mining equipment maker Simmons Equipment Co. is planning to expand its Tazewell County operations, creating more than 30 new jobs over the upcoming years.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe said Wednesday that the company plans to invest $1 million to expand its manufacturing operation. Simmons makes battery-powered scoops for the mining industry.

The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission approved up to $1.14 million in funding to be invested through the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center Foundation located in Abingdon. Officials say the funds will be used for the company's planned research and development and commercialization activities.
