Official: Pilot Reported Turbulence Before March Plane Crash in Norfolk

Posted: Updated:

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Federal investigators say a pilot reported turbulence before a small plane crashed while trying to land at Norfolk International Airport.

The pilot and two passengers were killed in the crash on March 3.

A preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board says the Mooney M20F was flying from Palatka, Florida, to Suffolk when the pilot contacted air traffic control and said he wanted to divert to the Norfolk airport.

A controller provided several altitude and course corrections during the plane's first approach. The report says the pilot then told the controller he wanted to make a second attempt. He said there was moderate turbulence and items were floating around in the plane's cabin.

The plane crashed in Norfolk Botanical Garden, about 2,300 feet northwest of the runway.
