Milford Cancer Survivor Testifies On Capitol Hill

MILFORD, Del. - Two-time cancer survivor, and Milford resident, Cindy Canaveri traveled to Washington DC as the Delaware lead ambassador for the American Cancer Society to request more cancer research funding.

Canaveri was diagnsoed with breast cancer in 2005. She went through a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation when two years alter, she was diagnosed with bladder cancer.

"I'm alive because of miracles," she said. "Through medical research and that's what we need."

And that's why she, along with celebrities like Pierce Brosnan and Kareem Adbul-Jabbar headed to Capitol Hill to ask legislators to allocate $1 billion to cancer research.

According to the Cancer Action Network, federal cancer research funding is down 26% since 2003. As the Delaware ambassador, Canaveri said she hopes to use her experience to put a face to the problem.

"I am very humbled," she said. "Being a cancer survivor has made me more empowered, it's made me feel as though I am fearless and that I can ask for what's needed for cancer patients and their families."

She also spoke with staff of Senator Tom Carper, and said she hopes something will come out of her meeting in the near future.
