Md. Senate Approves Bill to Ease Charter School Restrictions

Posted:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A Maryland Senate panel has approved a bill proposed by Gov. Larry Hogan to ease some restrictions that supporters say have made it harder for charter schools to grow in the state.

The committee voted 10-1 for the bill on Tuesday. That sends the bill to the full Senate.

Committee members say it is the product of considerable compromise after long discussions.

Joseph Getty, Hogan's legislative and policy director, says the measure offers a path to increasing flexibility charter schools will have in their operations.

Sen. Cheryl Kagan, a Montgomery County Democrat, was the lone no vote. She says she opposed a provision that enables the state's education board to grant a charter over the opposition of local school officials.
