SALISBURY, Md.- Authorities say a weekend traffic stop has led to the arrest of a 20-year-old Salisbury man after a loaded handgun was found to be in his possession. The man also turned out to be wanted since 2013 for assault.

The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office said that at around 9:24 p.m. Saturday, a deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding on U.S. 13 northbound in the area of Route 50 in Salisbury. During the stop, the deputy identified the rear seat passenger, Ramear Wheatley, as a fugitive wanted since 2013 on an arrest warrant that charged him with assault.

Authorities said that as the deputy took Wheatley into custody, the deputy observed a blue bag on the floorboard where Wheatley was sitting. The Sheriff's Office said that upon examination of the bag, the deputy discovered a .380 semi-automatic handgun that contained five rounds of ammunition.

Wheatley was taken into custody and charged with handgun on person, handgun in vehicle, possession of handgun by a minor, illegal possession of a regulated firearm and illegal possession of ammunition. He was ordered held in the Wicomico County Detention Center in lieu of $45,000 bond.

Wheatley was also detained on an additional $15,000 bond on the arrest warrant.
