Virginia Oyster and Clam Sales Break Records in 2014

Posted: Updated:
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP/WBOC)- Virginia's clam and oyster industries enjoyed a record year in 2014.

A new report says a record 243 million hard clams were sold last year. About 39.8 million oysters were sold, also a record.

Sales for both industries totaled a record $56 million. The amount includes about $39 million in clam sales and $17 million in oyster sales.

Shellfish farmers provided the data for the annual Virginia Shellfish Aquaculture Situation and Outlook Report, which was released Tuesday.

Karen Hudson with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science co-authored the report. She said oyster growers' revenue increased by 33 percent from 2013, while clam growers' revenue increased by 14 percent.

"It's all-around good news for the industry," Hudson said.

About 86 percent of oysters farmed in Virginia were sold out of state.

The 2014 results are drawn from 72 completed surveys returned to VIMS. Respondents include 16 clam growers, 62 intensive oyster growers, 13 extensive oyster growers, 5 shellfish hatcheries and nine growers who cultured both molluscs.

There is a intersection in Salisbury off Route 50 that has several roads leading into it and 12 traffic lights regulating it.

Mount Hermon Road, Long Avenue, Truitt Street, East Williams Street, and Main Street all intersect at one central location.

People in the community have mixed feelings about the intersection. Some say it should be left alone because it regulates traffic just fine while others say it is a nuisance.
