Frederick, Md., Recreates End-of-Civil War Celebration

Posted:

FREDERICK, Md. (AP)- The city of Frederick is lighting up its downtown with torches and candles to recreate an event marking the end of the Civil War 150 years ago.

The illumination ceremony Friday night begins at City Hall and includes a walking tour of historic buildings led by costumed interpreters.

City officials say Frederick residents illuminated the city on April 13, 1865, to celebrate the war's end and honor those who died in battle.

The illumination is part of a series of events that began Thursday, the 150th anniversary of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender.
