Report: 13 in Richmond Area Hospitalized by Tainted Heroin

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Heroin adulterated with a veterinary drug is sending users to the hospital in the Richmond area.

There are reports that 13 people in the region have been hospitalized in recent weeks after ingesting the tainted heroin.

While drug sellers often add substances such as flour to pure heroin to increase their profits, there have been reports of other more dangerous substances added.

Last month, the Virginia Poison Center at Virginia Commonwealth University notified state health officials of patients who were hospitalized for unusually bad reactions to heroin. Some needed treatment in cardiac intensive care units.

Toxicology results confirmed the heroin contained the drug clenbuterol. The drug is approved in Canada for use solely in horses, according to the FDA website.
