Motorcyclist Killed in Dover Crash

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.- Delaware State Police say a Milton man is dead following a crash involving a stolen motorcycle south of Dover.

Troopers said the crash happened shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday on South State Street in the area of North Old Mill Road. Police said 26-year-old Eric L. Stubbs was operating a 2011 Suzuki G 60 motorcycle at a high rate of speed in the southbound lane of South State Street when it crashed into a 2006 Jeep Rubicon in the northbound lane of the street.

Police said the driver of the Jeep, identified as 37-year-old Trey Small, had turned northbound onto South State Street from North Old Mill Road. According to investigators, the motorcycle continued in an eastbound direction for about five feet after hitting the Jeep, then landed on its side and burst into flames.

Troopers said Stubbs was ejected upon impact and was pronounced dead at the scene. Stubbs was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said.

Small, along with a 28-year-old female passenger from Wilmington, were not injured.

Police said speed may have been a factor in the crash. Troopers said the Suzuki Stubbs was operating was not motorcycle-endorsed. They also said it was reported stolen from the New Castle County Police Department.

South State Street was closed in the area of the crash for approximately four hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
