DOVER, Del.- For the third time in the team's history, the Delaware State University women's bowling team will compete in a national championship tournament.
The Hornet's are among 16 teams in the 2015 United States Bowling Congress XBowling Intercollegiate Team Championships, to be held Apr. 15-18 at Northrock Lanes in Wichita.
Last month, the Hornets earned their spot in the national tournament as a top-four finisher in the sectional competition. DSU is ranked 17th in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association monthly poll.
This will be DSU's first appearance at the USBC national tournament. The Hornets competed in the NCAA National Championship in 2009 and 2010. They advanced to the final four of the 2009 NCAA tourney.
The Hornets are led by their 2014-15 All-MEAC Second Team selections Courtney Davis (sr. Bethel,; Conn.) and Stephanie Sheridan (jr.; Factoryville, Pa.). Davis was averaging a team-high 198.9 heading into last month's MEAC tournament, while Sheridan averaged 193.1. Sheridan was tied for the seventh best single game in the MEAC this season at 266 in the DC Capital Classic.
Emerging as one of the MEAC's top newcomers this season, freshman Chelsey Merklinger averaged 193.6. She rolled the league's ninth best game this season at 263, also in the Capital Classic.
Amoni Knight (so.; Dover, Del.) Elizabeth Burkholder (fr.; Lancaster, Pa.) and Amber Macleod (fr.; Brick, N.J.) have also been major contributions to the Hornet's success this season.
