Judy Johnson to Be Recognized with Historical Marker

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A former Wilmington resident who became a star in baseball's Negro Leagues is being recognized with a historical marker.

WDEL-FM reports that a marker will be dedicated to Judy Johnson in the Wilmington park named for him on Thursday.

Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams calls Johnson a giant in the game at a time when African Americans weren't recognized for their abilities. He says he thinks Johnson is the best third baseman he knows of.

Johnson was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1975. Thursday's ceremony will mark the 40th anniversary of his induction.
