Va. House Speaker has Major Cash Going into Primary

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Republican Virginia House Speaker William J. Howell has access to nearly $1.4 million going into a June primary contest.

Newly filed campaign finance records show Howell's primary campaign account and two committees under his control raised $629,000 between January and March, according to the money-in-politics tracker the Virginia Public Access Project.

Howell typically uses his leadership political action committee and the House Republican campaign account to help other Republicans.

The speaker is facing Susan Stimpson in the primary contest for his Fredericksburg area House seat. Stimpson's most recent reports were not immediately available though she reported raising $30,000 in December.

Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe raised $750,000 during the first three months of this year for his PAC, which he will use to help Democrats try to retake the state Senate.
