Cayman Police: US Tourist Killed in Watercraft Collision

Posted:
GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) - Police say a cruise ship passenger from Virginia was been killed in the Cayman Islands when the personal watercraft he was operating collided with one driven by a teenage tourist.

Cayman police on Thursday identified the man as 31-year-old Robert Cole from Virgilina, Virginia.

Police say Cole and his female passenger were thrown from their rented machine when it collided with another personal watercraft operated by a 15-year-old from New York. They say the Virginia couple were passengers on the Carnival Conquest cruise ship. The collision occurred Wednesday off Grand Cayman's popular Seven Mile Beach.

The boy sustained a minor injury to his nose. The Virginia woman was treated and released from a hospital.

Progress on Bowers Beach Drainage Project at Mercy of the Tides

Wrapping up the major replacement of a drainage system beneath an oft-flooded in Bowers Beach has proved to be a slower process than some town officials and neighbors have hoped for.

A new drainage pipe has recently replaced a smaller and older one beneath Hubbard Avenue, a frequent spot for flooding after heavy rain. The system is intended to help flood waters disperse more quickly into the Murderkill River.
