Delaware Authorities Charge Man with Smuggling Cigarettes

DOVER, Del. (AP) -  A New York City man is facing cigarette smuggling charges after a traffic stop by Delaware State Police on state Route 1, according to authorities.

Police announced Monday that 25-year-old Mugahid Tahir Al Ghazali was stopped for speeding south of Odessa last week. 

Police say a search of the rental vehicle he was driving uncovered 394 cartons of untaxed cigarettes. A Division of Alcohol & Tobacco Enforcement (DATE) agent responded to the scene and verified that the cartons were obtained in Virginia and were being transported to an unknown destination. 

Al Ghazali was charged by DATE with Possession of untaxed cigarettes and attempting to evade delaware excise tax. 

Police say the rental car was confiscated and returned to the rental company. He was later released after posting a $5,500 cash only bail.
