SNOW HILL, Md.- The Worcester County Commissioners have proposed a 15.7 cents per $100 of assessed property value increase for all property owners in Worcester County.

According to Worcester County Commissioners, in order to fully fund the Fiscal 2016 requested budget, an additional $22 million in revenue would be needed. Each year's budget is a culmination of requests from each county department. Kim Moses, county spokesperson, said these wish lists could be fully funded or pared down depending on need, priority and available funding.

“In the event that the County Commissioners would want to fund the entire budget with this tax, that is how much it would be,” Moses said. “However, it is just a ballpark figure right now.”

The County Commissioners have scheduled a public hearing to receive public comments on the proposed Fiscal 2016 operating budget for May 5, at 7 p.m. at Snow Hill Middle School.

Since requested expenditures for 2016 exceed available revenues based upon current tax rates, County Commissioners would need to either reduce expenditures, increase taxes and fees, or tap Budget Stabilization funds, officials said.

Moses says after the public hearing, County Commissioners will consider all comments and hold a several budget work sessions before making a final determination on next year's budget.

The budget is scheduled to be voted on June 2.
