OCEAN CITY, Md.- Skateboarding on the boardwalk is prohibited within Ocean City limits between April 1 and October 1, except between the hours of 2 a.m. and 11 a.m.

In October 2012, Ocean City Mayor and City Council approved an amendment to the town's skateboarding ordinance which gave skateboarders the ability to ride on the boardwalk during the same time that bicycles were allowed.

According to Ocean City Police Department, this gave skateboarders a place to ride other than the skate park in the summer. During the winter months, October through March, the ordinance is relaxed and skateboarding is permitted throughout the city, officials said.

Local skateboarder C.J. Mitchell says skateboarding for him is more of a form of transportation than anything else.

“Most of the time it is just a mode of transportation; if I am going to work from 1st street to the boardwalk, I'm not going to drive, I'm going to skate,” Mitchell said. “Everybody gets mad about skateboarding but I don't see the big deal about it.”

According to Ocean City ordinances, skateboarders are not allowed on Atlantic Avenue from Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 a.m. of the following day as well as Springfest and Sunfest (Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday), between the hours of 12 p.m. and 2 a.m. of the following day.

“I think they are just trying to make it more of a resort town,” Mitchell said. “I think society just looks at skateboarders as diminishing everything about Ocean City, so I feel like they enforce these laws just to get skateboarding out of the town.”
