REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - Meals on Wheels partnered with Susan Alexander Truffles to raise money for Meals on Wheels and bring the decadent mushroom to the meal recipients.
Three local restaurants in the SoDel Concepts group, Blue Coast, Lupo di Mare and Fish On, are each holding tastings featuring truffles for $75 per person with all proceeds going towards Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels is a program that delivers daily meals to homebound elderly people.
The whole point of the initiative is to introduce truffles into the Sussex County food culture, but also benefit Meals on Wheels, and the people who received much fancier meals than they're used to.
Martin Burton is one of those recipients.
"I feel like a king today," he said after receiving the truffles.
The average Meal on Wheel delivery equals to about five dollars per meal, but once you add things like Susan Alexander's truffle oil and pure truffles, that adds about $250 to that meal.
"What we do with the truffles is help to bring people in, for the charity, for the chefs to cook with so we've combined our missions;" Alexander explained. "The passion for truffles, getting the word out and helping people in the process."
Mike and Eleanor Kardash enjoyed the truffles, but are more grateful for Meals on Wheels.
"Look at our ages, we're as old as the hills," Eleanor said.
"Thanks to the food from meals on wheels that's why we're here," Mike added.
