SALISBURY, Md.- Students at West Salisbury Elementary School were supposed to be headed to the Baltimore Zoo on Wednesday, but plans changed. Wicomico County Board of Education officials canceled that trip and sent students to the nation's capital instead.

Two coach buses pulled up to West Salisbury Elementary early Wednesday morning to pick up students for a trip to the National Zoo. Due to much of the unrest in Charm City earlier this week, school officials decided to keep students, chaperones and staff out of the city.

Doretta Williams, whose 6-year-old granddaughter attends the school, had second thoughts about plans for the initial trip when she saw the events begin to unfold last week.

"My first thought was that she [her granddaughter] wasn't going to be able to go," Williams said. " I'm grateful that they changed it [the field trip]."

Despite relative calm in the streets of Baltimore now, parents tell WBOC the public school system made the best decision.

"That's good that the school decided to go to another one, another zoo, because they don't want nothing to happen," said Erica Grant, whose 6-year-old daughter goes to the school.

"It is still very unpredictable in Baltimore," Williams added.

A second trip to the Baltimore Zoo for Mardela Middle and High School students has also been canceled for Friday.

West Salisbury Elementary students are supposed to visit the Maryland Science Center, located in Baltimore, next week. School officials have not made a decision on whether they will cancel  that trip.
