Salisbury City Prepares for "Downtown SBY Die-In and Justice Vigil"

Posted:

SALISBURY, Md. – A flyer promoting a “Die-In and Justice Vigil” has put the city of Salisbury on alert. The flyer is inviting people to gather for “peaceful, free-form expression…in unity with the struggle in Baltimore.” On Wednesday, Salisbury city mayor Jim Ireton called a press conference to address the event.

"We want people to come and peacefully gather.” Ireton said, “That is their right and we are trying to provide the opportunity and the location for them to do that."

The city says it found out about the event Wednesday morning. Police Chief Barbara Duncan says her department has been unable to identify who is organizing the gathering. She says she doesn't believe it will escalate into anything dangerous. However, the city has activated a Level 2 watch and will have extra police present at the event.

Some businesses expressed concern. "After seeing what's happened in Baltimore it puts a little bit of fear in someone who is a manager of a shop in downtown Salisbury," Says Debra S. who manages a store in the plaza.

Others say they have faith in the community. "I really don't think there's going to be much reaction to it but I do think it's good that they allow the community to express their feelings about it,” says Gerald Patt, owner of Cake Art.

The “Downtown SBY Die-In and Justice Vigil” is scheduled to begin at 8:30 pm.
