DSU Students March Through Dover

Posted:

DOVER, Del. (WBOC) - A group of about 75 students from Delaware State University marched from their campus to Legislative hall Friday morning in Dover - right around the time the state's attorney in Baltimore City was announcing charges against six police officers in the arrest and death of Freddie Gray.

It was second student march on the peninsula this week. Tuesday students from UMES walked through Princess Anne, Md..

The kids in Dover stayed to the sidewalks. They had a police escort. They were able to strongly bring their message of wanting justice to the streets of the city.

"We had a vision to come together not just to march for justice in Baltimore but for all the young, black lives that have felt injustice," said Lojae Williams, a senior at DSU. "We just wanted to make a statement. We wanted to stand up for all the people who don't have voice or think they don't have voices."

"To unify, come together as a people, to raise awareness and empower each other," Akilah McCrorey, a DSU junior, said.

From the march through town to where they stopped on the Legislative Mall, their voices were loud, and the whole event was peaceful.

"If we got, you know, crazy or out of hand, it would be about us. And it's not about us," Williams said.

They read poems, said prayers and talked about how they felt. The students wanted to bring their message beyond their school's campus.

"We wanted to be downtown," said Williams. "We wanted to reach as many people as we could."

"I think that this doesn't only impact the people who are here. I think this impacts everyone who saw us," said McCrorey.

And to make sure even more people saw them, the group marched and chanted all the way back to campus, too.

Friday's march comes after there was also a peaceful gathering on the DSU campus earlier this week - the day after the worst of the rioting in Baltimore.
