MILLSBORO, Del. - Police say a Millsboro man was arrested last week for operating a make-shift methamphetamine lab.

At about 2:45 p.m. Friday, Millsboro officers say they were contacted by the town maintenance department about several people trespassing on property maintained by the town. The maintenance department said the suspects took off when the workers arrived to do a routine inspection on a pump station.

After police responded to the scene, authorities say the officers determined the suspects were actually operating a make-shift lab to manufacture methamphetamine. DNREC and the Millsboro Volunteer Fire Company were contacted and the lab was safely dismantled, according to police.

Through investigation, police say 33-year-old Steven P. Coffey, of Millsboro, was developed as a suspect. The following morning, a warrant was obtained for Coffey for criminal trespass and manufacturing a controlled substance, police said.

On Saturday, Coffey was seen walking along Route 113 and was placed under arrest, according to police. Once at the police department, police say they searched Coffey's backpack and found materials used to operate a clandestine lab in order to produce methamphetamine.

Additional charges were filed in a separate warrant for an additional charge of manufacturing a controlled substance and unlawfully attempting to operate a clandestine laboratory, authorities said.

DNREC and the Millsboro Volunteer Fire Co. safely took possession of the materials that Coffey had in his possession, police said.

Coffey is being held on a secure bond at the Sussex Correctional Institute pending future court proceedings.
