SNOW HILL, Md.– A Pocomoke City man has been charged with second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse in connection with the death of the man's 3-year-old nephew, the Worcester County State's Attorney's Office said Wednesday.

Officials said Kevin M. Sewell, 27, is being held without bond.

According to the State's Attorney's Office, Sewell is in custody for an incident that happened on May 3 that resulted in the child's death.

Worcester County State's Attorney Beau H. Oglesby said in a statement, “While certain details of the investigation cannot be released at this time, the Office of the State's Attorney can confirm that the child was left in the care of Kevin Sewell, who is the minor's uncle. It was during this time that the child received multiple injuries that resulted in the child being placed on life support. Ultimately the child succumbed to his injuries and passed away Tuesday afternoon while at The Children's Hospital of the King's Daughter in Norfolk, Va.”

Prosecutors said the penalty for second-degree murder is a maximum of 30 years in prison. The penalty for first-degree child abuse is 40 years behind bars.

Sewell is being held at the Worcester County Jail.
