SALISBURY, Md. – Plans are moving forward on an $80,000 expansion project at "Ben's Red Swings" playground in the Salisbury City Park.

The playground was built more than 10 years ago in honor of Ben Layton, who in 2002 lost his battle with leukemia at the age of 4.

Since its inception, Ben's Red Swings has been a hit in the community. The playground has become so popular that a full restroom facility is now set to be built.

Matt Drew is a friend of the Layton family. His company designed the playground, as well as the new building.

"It's a tremendous satisfaction," Drew said. "You know, nothing will replace a life and this by no means replaces Ben's life. But at least it's a tribute to him that other kids will get to enjoy something in his memory."

Construction on the facility is expected to begin in July and is expected to be completed sometime in the fall, Drew said.

The new building is not the only project in the works. Organizers are hoping to raise an additional $30,000 to add resilient surfaces to parts of the playground.
