DOVER, Del.- Twenty-three fallen Delaware State Police troopers were remembered Wednesday as the division hosted its annual police memorial ceremony to pay tribute to those killed in the line of duty.

"It's very important for us to recognize and observe and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the citizens of delaware to keep us very safe," said DSP Sgt. Richard Bratz.

For Bratz, memorial services like this one hit home.

"It means a lot more for me. Sometimes I think about a classmate of mine Sandy Wagner who very early on paid the ultimate sacrifice," Bratz said. "It was very unfortunate, so I have a very special place for that in my heart."

Trooper Sandra Wagner was killed when a tractor-trailer hit her patrol car while she was pursuing a vehicle. She served the agency for only eight months.

Surviving family members and fellow troopers walked for their loved ones. Each one of them placing a rose on the memorial.

"It means a lot to come out here and honor and pay tribute and observe those who did give the ultimate sacrifice and to go out to work every day and to protect us all," Bratz said.

Delaware State Police host this memorial annually. With heavy hearts, loved ones continue to come out to remember those who lost their lives protecting the state of Delaware.
