Fairfax Co. Schools to Ban Gender Identity Discrimination

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP)- The Fairfax County school board has voted to ban discrimination on the basis of gender identity in the school system.

The proposal had attracted significant opposition from parents and conservative activists who believe the ban will allow boys to use girls' bathrooms and vice versa, and protect cross-dressing teachers.

Supporters of the move said it was important to prohibit discrimination, and expected little practical change in day-to-day operation of the schools.

At a raucous meeting Thursday night that included hoots and catcalls from opponents, the board voted 10-1 in support of the measure, with one abstention.

Fairfax County runs the state's largest public school system.
