Sussex County Council Approves Food Truck Ordinance

GEORGETOWN, Del. - The Sussex County Council voted unanimously for an ordinance to amend the process for street food vendors to apply for permits in the county.

Assistant County Attorney Vince Robertson spoke at the council meeting about the new process.

"We want to support small businesses where appropriate in Sussex County," he said. "So it'll streamline their approval process, it'll save them a lot of time and a lot of money if they fit those categories."

Those categories include small in size, temporary and do not interfere with pedestrian or vehicular movement.

Lou DiAmico's food truck, Backyard Louie's BBQ is one of those businesses.

"You had a lot of red tape that you had to go through to do everything right," he explained. "It could have been about a six month process plus money."

Now, it's an $100 application fee annually.

But food trucks are known for roaming around, and that would not be allowed with this permit. A permanent location would have to be kept, and only from March 15th to October 15th.

This does not apply to produce stands or special events.
