Virginia Ex-correctional Officer Indicted in Bribery Scheme

PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - Authorities say a former correctional officer has been indicted in a bribery scheme involving smuggling drugs and cigarettes to inmates at a federal prison in exchange for money.

Thirty-seven-year-old Jermaine Brown of Chesterfield County was indicted Friday by a federal grand jury on charges of bribery and conspiracy to commit bribery. The U.S. Attorney's Office says while Brown was employed as a federal correctional officer at the medium security prison in Petersburg, he engaged in a conspiracy to smuggle heroin, marijuana and cigarettes to inmates in exchange for money.

The indictment says inmates had friends or family wire transfer money to Brown's co-conspirator, who then paid Brown.

Brown received wire transfers from inmates totaling $3,050 in exchange for contraband between December 2010 and March 2011.
