Only Bookstore in Kent County to Close, Hopes to Reopen

Posted:
DOVER, Del. (WBOC) - Acorn Books in Dover is a small, independent bookstore. It's the only bookstore in Kent County. And it's closing.

Local author Everett De Morier is doing a book signing for his new novel 33 Cecils Saturday at Acorn Books.

"We are doing the last book signing at the last bookstore in Dover," he said.

"Right now we're unable to stay in this location anymore. We can't sustain the store on the rent that's being requested," said Ginny Jewell, who owns Acorn Books.

Jewell used to work at Dover's Atlantic Books. That store closed in 2012. Bookstores nationwide were hit hard by the recession but have been doing better recently.

"You can't make a killing in books anymore, but you can make a living. And this store is an example of that. We make good money at this store, and we spend it all trying to sustain the store," Jewell said.

Ezzy Mondragon has worked at Acorn Books for almost two years.

"t's a little sad, but I'm also glad we were here to begin with. We have gotten a lot of books out into the community," she said.

De Morier says the future of bookstores big and small has yet to be written.

"There's a big question mark on bookstores. Are the big box stores going to be able to exist? Are little stores like this going to be able to exist. Nobody really knows. So, if they are going away, we need to enjoy them," he said. "It's something that's going to be missed. I'm afraid that we're not even going to realize we miss it until it's too late."

Jewell hopes this won't be her store's final chapter. She's working to find a new, smaller space, so the "Store Closing Sale" sign she has out front of her store can turn into a "Store Moving Sale" sign.

Progress on Bowers Beach Drainage Project at Mercy of the Tides

Wrapping up the major replacement of a drainage system beneath an oft-flooded in Bowers Beach has proved to be a slower process than some town officials and neighbors have hoped for.

A new drainage pipe has recently replaced a smaller and older one beneath Hubbard Avenue, a frequent spot for flooding after heavy rain. The system is intended to help flood waters disperse more quickly into the Murderkill River.
