EASTON, Md. - Easton Police have arrested a man on attempted murder and assault after he allegedly stabbed a person in the back.

Police say the arrest stemmed from an incident on Saturday, May 23, in the 600 block of Goldsborough Street. Police say just before 3 a.m., officers responded for a 21-year-old Easton man who had been stabbed in the back. Police say the man told them he was in a fight earlier in the night with three African-American men at Sidetracked Saloon. Police say the man then told them he was jumped by the men and stabbed.

Paramedics arrived on scene and determined that the victim would need to be treated at a trauma center, according to police. The victim was then air-lifted to the University of Maryland R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, police say. Detectives say they were later told the victim's injuries were extensive, but he was in stable condition. Police say the victim was later released from the hospital.

On Thursday, police say detectives with the assistance of the Maryland State Police Fugitive Task Force Unit, arrested 62-year-old Joseph R. Smith on an arrest warrant. He's charged with attempted first and second degree murder, first and second degree assault, and reckless endangerment, according to police. He was taken before a Talbot County District Court Commissioner where he was ordered to be held on no bond, police say.

The incident is still under investigation.
