WACHAPREAGUE, ,Va.- A man who was being taken to the hospital died after the ambulance he was in collided with a transit bus Monday afternoon in Accomack County.

Virginia State Police said the accident happened just before 4 p.m. on Route 13 near route 180 in Wachapreague.

Police said a Bloxom Volunteer Rescue Squad ambulance was heading southbound on Route 13, transporting 60-year-old Douglas McCready to the hospital.

Troopers said the ambulance had its sirens on when it drove through a red light. However, the ambulance struck a 2013 Ford Star transit bus. The ambulance then lost control and flipped over, according to investigators.

Police said three EMS workers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
