Ocean City Businesses Fundraise for Cedar Chapel

Posted:

OCEAN CITY, Md.-Four local businesses came together Monday morning to host a 'jet powered fundraiser' in hopes of raising $2,500 for Cedar Chapel Special school.

OceanCity.com, Odyssea Watersports, Jetovator and Ocean City Brewing Company combined forces to host this first ever fundraiser. They have invited the Ocean City community to help raise money for kids who need it most.

Ann Hilliyer is the CEO of StateVentures and says this event is the perfect way to help a good cause.

"It came up that they're trying to put together a courtyard, and put flooring down on a courtyard so they can expand their educational space," Hilliyer said. "If we can help get the flooring done and we can raise even more money, we'll get the roof on it too, so we are trying to expand their educational space at Cedar Chapel for kids who are handicapped and could use a little extra help."

Representatives from local businesses were able to "fly" to raise money today. Among those businesses were 3rd Wave Brewing Company, Assawoman Bay Brewing Company, Ocean City Hotel Motel Management and Worcester County Tourism.

"Each of the businesses, we're going to have them fundraise so it'll be about a week or two weeks while we're in the fundraising mode."

Flyers are currently raising donations at www.crowdrise.com/cedarchapeljetpowered. Additional flyers are invited to add their name to the fundraising team by signing on to help fundraise by clicking the "Fundraise for this Campaign" button and adding yourself.

Located in Snow Hill, Maryland, Cedar Chapel Special School serves Worcester County students between the ages of 3-21 who have significant intellectual disabilities. The school's vision is to ensure that their "students will reach their full potential, successfully experience life's transitions, and develop a positive sense of self-worth."

'Ghost Pots' Hurting Chesapeake Bay's Blue Crab Population

Crabbing season is well underway, and that means hundreds of thousands of crab pots are in the Chesapeake Bay catching blue crabs.

Every morning during crabbing season, you can see watermen gathering up their pots, collecting their catch, and putting the pots back in the water. What you cannot see is the problem: pots that have had their lines severed sit on the bay's bottom, sometimes never seen again, along with the crabs inside them.
