Hurricane Sandy Aid Committee Receives Praise

Posted:

CRISFIELD, Md.- The Somerset County Long Term Recovery Committee's efforts were acknowledged at the 39th annual J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam Bake.

The committee was formed a few short weeks after the disastrous Hurricane Sandy hit with the hopes of repairing some homes in need.

At the clambake and crabfeast, volunteers and staff members were able to pick crabs while being recognized by Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot. The award being presented was the 2015 William Donald Schaefer People Helping People award.

The award was established in 2012 to honor Schaefer's previous public service during his time as Maryland governor and state comptroller. The award is presented in each of the state's 23 counties and Baltimore City.

Pastor Phil Huber, disaster response coordinator for the Lutheran Disaster Response, says the committee is thrilled to receive this award.

"The People Helping People award is given to a person or an agency that have demonstrated work, like the kind of spirit that mayor and Schaefer had."

The committee has been able to repair homes in Somerset County for $65,000 with the help of nine staff members and as much as 3,500 volunteers.

Huber says volunteers have been huge in making this vision possible.

"We've spent a little over  $4.2 million in the construction of new homes and repair of old homes," Huber said. "The money has come primarily through the American Red Cross and through the various denominations through the offering plate from people sitting in the pew."

The committee plans to finish up their work in September, and at that point they will have repaired 220 homes and built 21 new homes.
