Uber, Lyft Vehicles Outnumber Taxis on Virginia Peninsula

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - The number of registered drivers for such services as Uber and Lyft on the Virginia Peninsula is greater than the number of taxis in the area.
The Daily Press eports that as of July 21, 402 vehicles garaged in the greater Peninsula area, including Gloucester County and Williamsburg, had been registered as transportation network company vehicles, according to numbers provided by the Department of Motor Vehicles. That statistic surpasses the number of taxicabs in the same area - 351 - based on active taxi license plates garaged in the area as of July 9.
On July 1, the state began requiring the personal vehicles that transport passengers via app-based platforms such as Uber to be registered with the DMV after lawmakers crafted new transportation network company regulations earlier this year.
