DNREC Issues Code Orange Air Quality Alert

Posted:

LEWES, Del. - Due to hot and sunny weather and little air movement, the ozone levels in Delaware are higher than usual. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources issued a code orange air quality alert meaning being outside can be unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Gen Ritter and her husband walked to lunch in Lewes, but picked a nearby spot and said they won't be outside much longer than that walk.

"We had been out really early this morning and [my husband] said he had trouble breathing," she explained. "And I said you know what, that's why you had trouble breathing."

Simply, a code orange means there are pollutants in the air caused by prolonged days of heat that could make it difficult to breathe.

Sensitive groups include the elderly, the very young and those with asthma or lung or heart disease.

Outdoor strenuous activity is not recommended and moreover, doctors recommend staying inside altogether.

Dr. Keith Sokoloff sees patients with respiratory issues on sweltering days like Wednesday.

"During a code orange it's actually recommended that even healthy individuals avoid outside activity or being around high traffic areas," he said.

"I think people should take it seriously," Ritter continued. "Especially if you get older and like my husband...  you should take it seriously because the government has taken it upon themselves to issue a warning to tell you to be careful."

DNREC air quality officials do expect another hot and humid day Thursday, but said a cloud cover will push the ozone levels back down to moderate.

This is the fourth code orange in Delaware this summer.
