Talbot Confederate Monument's Days May be Numbered

Updated:

EASTON, Md.-  The Talbot Boys monument's days may be numbered.  Richard Potter, president of the Talbot County NAACP, said the monument needs to be removed from the courthouse grounds.

"You have individuals who fought to preserve slavery. So is that what we want to commemorate on the courthouse lawn? Individuals who fought to preserve slavery, the oppression of an entire race of people, so that's the main reason why we want to see it removed," said Potter.

The group does not believe the monument should be destroyed or melted down, rather moved to a cemetery in Easton, standing alongside the graves of those who served on the confederate side of the civil war.  But not everyone is in agreement that the statue should move.

"I think because it's been here all these years and it's part of the history of Talbot county and Easton.  I think it's silly all these changes that people with too much time on their hands would like to do," said Rose Miles of Easton.

And some say the Frederick Douglass statue on the opposite side balances it out.

"It does balance it out. It shows both sides to the story, and Maryland being a divided state, it shows what occurred here," said Nicholas Tindall of Easton.

Bishop Joel Johnson says the confederate statue does not belong on the grounds where a slave market once stood.

"There's absolutely no balance between that slave market just a few feet away from this statue. It's unfortunate and it is tragic."

At least for now, the monument stands, battle flag and all, on the courthouse lawn in Talbot county.
