CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. - Following this week's 90th Chincoteague Pony Swim on Virginia's Eastern Shore, the ponies are getting ready to swim back home to Assateague Island Friday.

According to the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce, the ponies will make the swim back Friday morning some time between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. If you wish to see this, the Chamber suggests taking the trolley.

After making their annual swim from Assateague to Chincoteague on Wednesday, 61 ponies were auctioned off Thursday by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, according to the Chamber, raising a total of  $169,576. The proceeds benefit the fire company, which help care for the ponies.

Prices for ponies ranged from $25,000 to $500, according to the Chamber. The $25,000 bid broke a Pony Auction record - it is the highest price ever paid for a buyback, a pony that is returned with the herd to live on Assateague Island and help to keep the herd replenished. The Chamber says that top sale was for a filly who was fathered by Chincoteague's famed stallion "Surfer Dude" who died earlier this year. The Chamber says many of Surfer Dude's last foals were auctioned off, mostly as buybacks so they can carry on Surfer Dude's heritage on Assateague.
