Newark, MD, - Following the unexpected passing of beloved field hockey coach and educator Susan Pusey, Brandi Castaneda has been tapped to take the helm as Interim Head Coach of Pocomoke High School’s distinguished field hockey program for the 2015-2016 school year.
An alumna of Pocomoke High School and its field hockey program, Castaneda has been employed with the district for eleven years, the last five of which as a teacher. A graduate of Salisbury University, Castaneda received her master’s degree from the University of Phoenix in 2011. She played field hockey at the collegiate level, playing at Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University).
“Susan Pusey was a true legend that no one could ever replace. She was a beacon of light for countless lives,” Castaneda said. “I was fortunate enough to receive her guidance, love and support through my entire life, and I am incredibly humbled to have been asked to step into this position.”
Castaneda was also an integral part of the legendary field hockey team in the 1994 season, which not only went undefeated but unscored upon - Susan Pusey’s first state championship team. She is honored to continue the legacy of excellence that this program has instilled in her and inspired in so many others.
“This year, I will join the ranks of Pocomoke Field Hockey once again to lead these girls down a path Coach Pusey paved with integrity and honor,” Castaneda said. “For players past and present, Susan Pusey will always be our coach, but as Warriors we must pull together and uphold the goals and dreams we all share.”
