WORTON, Md. (AP) - Maryland State Police say a 13-year veteran of the agency has been charged with assaulting a woman with whom he had a previous relationship.

Police say early Sunday, 32-year-old Sgt. Daniel T. Baxter got into a fight with the woman at Baxter's home in Worton. Investigators say Baxter threatened to kill the woman, who fled to Baxter's parents' home next door.

Authorities say Baxter followed her with an unloaded shotgun and a box of shells. Police say his father then intervened.

The woman was taken to a hospital with head injuries.

On Wednesday, Baxter was charged with assault and reckless endangerment. He surrendered to the Kent County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday.

State police say Baxter has been suspended without pay.
