Rehoboth Beach Man Goes to Prison in Infant Son's Death

GEORGETOWN, Del.- A Rehoboth Beach man who pleaded guilty in April to killing his infant son was sentenced Friday to nearly 15 years in prison.

With tears in his eyes and emotion in his voice, 22-year-old Sidney G. Davis III took full responsibility for his son's death prior to being sentenced to 14 and a half years behind bars. He told the judge that he "aches to hold his son again" and he "wished he could trade places."

According to court documents, on May 10, 2014, Davis called 911 and said his son, Zha-den Davis was not breathing. The infant was rushed to a hospital and died the next day. Documents say the medical examiner ruled that the baby died of head trauma, and prosecutors allege that Davis shook the child.

Police say on May 13, 2014, Sidney Davis was brought into Troop 4 in Georgetown by family members where he was interviewed by homicide detectives. Police said it was determined through the interview that Zha-den and his twin brother were in the care of their father from that Friday night into Saturday morning while the mother of the children was away. Investigators said that at one point on May 10, 2014, Zha-den had become upset and was crying when his father began shaking the child in an attempt to quiet the infant.  This happened once again the next morning just after the mother of the twins briefly visited with them in the room before leaving for work, police said.

Davis' lawyer said his client is a decent person who had a momentary lapse that resulted in a tragic disaster.
