OCEAN VIEW, Del. - The new mile-long Assawoman Canal Trail is officially open after a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday.

Gov. Jack Markell, along with officials from the Delaware Department of Transportation, was in attendance to celebrate the new trail for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The trail, part of a regional network of trails connects Ocean View, Bethany Beach, South Bethany and communities Sea Colony and Bahama Beach Cottages.

Tyler Nellan works at Bicycles, a shop in Bethany, and thinks the Assawoman Canal Trail will keep bicyclists much safer than what currently is available.

"It's pretty much how you get around around here.. especially during the summertime," he said. "The fact that you can actually go that far and not really have to worry about any cars is gonna make a lot of people feel a lot safer."

The project isn't in conjunction with DelDOT, but according to officials, it does go hand in hand with the department's goal of building paths and trailways that support the growing population and therefore leads to the bigger picture of getting more people to walk and bike and ultimately reduce traffic.

Marianne Smith, of Bethany Beach, took advantage of the trail immediately and agrees it will help get people outside.

"Traditionally people have not been able to walk along 26 very easily, or bike," she explained. "So in that respect I think that would be absolutely terrific."

The trail starts at 7 Town Road in Ocean View and follows the canal.
