Del. State Police Offering Citizens Academy in Sussex County

GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP/WBOC)- Delaware State Police are inviting members of the public to participate in a Citizen's Police Academy.
    
Police said the academy will begin on Oct. 15 and last for six sessions. The sessions will take place Thursday evenings and last from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Most classes will take place at the Delaware State Police 911 center in Georgetown.
    
Police said participants will learn about criminal and traffic investigations, special units and other law enforcement topics. Participants will also have the opportunity to ride with patrol troopers.
    
Police said class size will be limited to 20 participants and a background check will be conducted on all applicants.
    
The deadline for registration is Sept. 17. Interested residents can get an application online at: http://dsp.delaware.gov/citizen_police_academy.shtml

    Pennsylvania Woman Wounded by Windswept Umbrella on Ocean City Beach

    A scary scene on the Ocean City beach Sunday afternoon after a Pennsylvania woman was wounded by a windswept umbrella. Ocean City Beach Patrol said the incident happened on the 54th Street beach, and they received the call just after 3 p.m. Beach Patrol said an unattended umbrella swept by the wind pierced the woman's skin on her upper left chest. However, Captain Butch Arbin who was on scene said it was a non-life threatening injury.
