Governor Urged to Keep Virginia Lottery in Downtown Richmond

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- A half-dozen elected officials from the Richmond region are urging Virgina Gov. Terry McAuliffe and lottery officials to keep the Virginia Lottery's headquarters and its 200 employees from moving away from downtown Richmond.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1JeBV01 ) reports that Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones and five state lawmakers have sent nearly identical letters to McAuliffe and lottery Executive Director Paula Otto over the past two months. In the letters, the officials say the lottery's possible departure to the Richmond suburbs would hurt the progress the city is making to revitalize the downtown community.

The lottery's planned move, expected to occur within the next year, is part of a larger renovation of state buildings at Capitol Square that will require several state offices to shuffle while work is under way.
